The rise of new energy vehicles (NEVs) has sparked a boom in the power battery industry, driving unprecedented demand for advanced materials. At the forefront of this shift is JinChuan Group Nickel Salts Co., Ltd., a key subsidiary of JinChuan Group, which has turned once-overlooked by-products into vital resources. By converting crude nickel sulfate solutions into essential precursors like nickel sulfate for ternary battery materials, the company is fueling the clean energy revolution.

Turning Waste into Valuable Resources

Sourcing its raw materials from Lanzhou JinChuan New Material Technology Co., Ltd. and JinChuan Group Copper Co., Ltd.’s copper salt plant, JinChuan Nickel Salts has transformed what was once considered waste into a "treasure trove." Han Junwen, vice plant manager of the raw material plant, explains the efficiency: “From crude nickel sulfate solutions, we produce our flagship nickel sulfate in just two days, followed by nickel chloride, nickel oxide, and more.” This streamlined process underscores the company’s ability to deliver high-quality materials swiftly and sustainably.

Strategic Upgrading Enhances Efficiency

A cornerstone of Jinchuan’s strategy is its 100,000-ton/year nickel sulfate solution upgrading project, a flagship initiative under the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). This project supplies nickel sulfate solution directly to ternary precursor production, bypassing traditional steps like evaporation, crystallization, and packaging. “This saves water, electricity, steam, and materials like bags and trays, cutting costs for us and simplifying precursor production for downstream users,” Han notes. The result is a cost-effective, win-win solution that enhances JinChuan’s power battery industry chain and positions it to capitalize on the NEV market’s growth.

Automation Drives Technological Excellence

Recent upgrades have taken JinChuan Nickel Salts to new heights. The battery-grade nickel sulfate production line now features full automation of key processes, including extraction and evaporation, while the electroplating-grade line boasts automated production and packaging with informatized controls. These advancements have yielded over 30 technological and process innovations, earning the company recognition as one of China’s 200 world-class specialized, refined, and new demonstration enterprises in March 2023—the only one from Gansu Province.

Today, JinChuan Nickel Salts stands as a professional leader, producing 205,000 tons of nickel sulfate, 10,000 tons of nickel chloride, 1,000 tons of nickel carbonate, and 1,500 tons of nickel oxide annually. Its versatile technical solutions for handling crude nickel sulfate solutions highlight its adaptability and expertise.
